Starting Seeds in Citrus Shells

Citrus PlanterHere’s an idea for you: instead of using plastic pots or jiffy pots, try using a hollowed out citrus shell! Oranges, lemons, limes and more can be used to start your seedlings. Make sure you poke a drain hole in the bottom, though!

The positive side of this is that you can plant the whole thing into the ground & it will only benefit your plant. This adds nutrients to the soil as the shell decomposes. Some pests also detest or can’t tolerate citrus, in turn this is a natural combatant for some garden pests. Citrus oils kill many flying and crawling insects on contact by destroying the waxy coating of the insect’s respiratory system. Organic pest control along with a soil enhancer!
